What is the meaning of thyroid?

The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland of two inches in length. It is located very close the base of our neck right above the collarbone. The thyroid gland is a part of the endocrine system that produce, store, and release hormones into the blood. From the blood hormones reach the body’s cells. The thyroid gland consumes iodine from the foods we eat to produce two hormones:

  • Triiodothyronine (T3)
  • Thyroxine (T4)

It is important that the secretion to T3 and T4 should not be too high and two low. Two glands in the brain hypothalamus and the pituitary communicate to make the balance.
